Course Information

Course Description

If You Have a Voice, You Can Sing is a five-week introductory vocal course designed to help women become more confident and comfortable using their voices. No previous singing experience is necessary, the course begins with the simple premise that the voice is an instrument, and like any instrument, it can be understood, practiced, strengthened, and developed.

Throughout the course, students will learn foundational vocal techniques through practical exercises in breathing, posture, vocal physiology, pitch recognition, ear training, warm-ups, tone, and range. Each week will introduce a new skill and provide opportunities to practice it in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Students will then apply the techniques they have learned through appropriate songs and vocal pieces.

The goal is not perfection or performance, but helping each student better understand her own voice, develop healthy vocal habits, and gain the confidence and practical tools to continue growing as a vocalist.

Course Schedule

Week 1: Breathe!Breath Support & Control
Students will learn the foundations of healthy breathing for singing, including diaphragmatic breathing, breath support, and breath control. We will practice exercises that help students become more aware of how they breathe and how breath directly affects vocal strength, stability, and sound.

Week 2: It’s Really a Science, Understanding Your Voice
The more we understand how the voice works, the better we can learn to use it. Students will receive a basic introduction to vocal physiology and explore how posture, relaxation, resonance, and tongue placement affect vocal production. We will also discuss healthy vocal habits and ways to avoid unnecessary tension while singing.

Week 3: Repeat After Me, Pitch Recognition & Ear Training
Students will be introduced to the solfège syllables of the major scale and practice listening for and reproducing pitches. Through call-and-response exercises, students will begin developing greater pitch accuracy and musical awareness. Depending on the experience and progress of the class, basic harmony may also be introduced.

Week 4: Work It Out!, Vocal Warm-Ups & Exercises
Students will build a practical collection of vocal warm-ups and exercises that can be used beyond the course. We will work on vocal agility, resonance, articulation, tone, and consistency while learning how to warm up the voice safely and effectively.

Week 5: Take It Easy: Range, Strength & Tone
In our final week, students will explore ways to gradually expand their vocal range without force, strain, or pressure. We will also work on developing vocal strength and improving tone while recognizing and respecting the uniqueness of each person’s natural voice. Students will leave with exercises and techniques they can continue practicing independently.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proper breathing techniques and breath support for healthy vocal production.
  • Identify basic vocal anatomy and apply healthy posture, tongue placement, and vocal techniques while singing.
  • Recognize and reproduce basic pitches using solfège and introductory ear-training techniques.
  • Perform a series of vocal warm-ups and exercises independently to develop pitch, tone, agility, and vocal strength.
  • Apply healthy techniques for developing vocal range and sing with increased confidence, control, and awareness of their individual voice.
