Course Information

Course Description

An in-depth study of the forty-hadith compilation of Imām al-Nawawī, this course is designed to provide students with a foundation in the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ was given jawāmiʿal-kalim (جوامع الكلم), or the ability to say much in very few words. The hadith of the Prophet ﷺ combine eloquence with deep, encompassing meanings in a uniquely simple way. This particular compilation was chosen because it includes ṣaḥīḥ hadith and covers a variety of subjects.

By the end of this course, students will be able to translate, understand, and draw practical life lessons from the text of the forty hadith in this compilation. The first twenty hadith are covered in Part 1 and the second twenty hadith are covered in Part 2.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Explain the meaning of ‘jawāmiʿ al-kalim’ as one of the divine gifts given to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and have an understanding of the extent and the importance of that gift.
• Relate the noble companions’ approach to the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, their eagerness to learn from him, and their deep-beyond-words understanding of his hadiths.
• Analyze the hadiths in depth and extract the multiple lessons and directives (of each) often indicated by the sophisticated language.
• Extrapolate the aqīda issues, shari’a rules, fiqh rules, sunna and ādāb of different subjects covered in these hadiths.
• Identify the continuing tarbiya offered by the Prophet ﷺ to his noble companions throughout his many leadership roles.
• Explain the importance of the ‘Ibadah’ aspect of learning and memorizing hadith as a means of pleasing Allah swt and drawing closer to the Prophet ﷺ. 
• Analyze and explain selected hadiths of the Nawawi collection.

computer and reliable high-speed internet. Courses at Ribāṭ University are delivered through Canvas and may include video lectures, interactive discussions, digital readings, and multimedia assignments.
