Ijāza in the Forty Hadith of Imām Nawawī

This ijāza course guides students through Imām al-Nawawī’s Arbaʿīn, the renowned collection of forty hadith that encapsulate the essence of Islam. Each hadith, brief yet profound, offers timeless lessons on faith, ethics, and spiritual growth.

Students will read the Arabic text accurately, study vocabulary and variant readings, and explore the meaning and relevance of each hadith in personal and communal life. The course connects learners to the classical chain of transmission (sanad), linking them to a living tradition of scholarship and devotion.

Students will be assessed in an oral exam that includes reading, vocabulary, explanation and discussion. Students have one year to complete this ijaza.

Program Objectives

By the end of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Reading Accuracy and Fluency: Read the Arabic text of Imām al-Nawawī’s Arbaʿīn fluently and precisely, recognizing key vocabulary, grammatical structures, and variant readings.
  2. Comprehension and Application: Analyze the language and context of each hadith to derive ethical, theological, and spiritual lessons, and apply these teachings meaningfully within personal and communal life.
  3. Hadith Narrators and Transmission: Identify the primary narrators of the hadith, their role within the classical chain of transmission (sanad), and the significance of scholarly continuity in preserving the prophetic tradition.
