Soon after, in 2021, Karima registered for her first classes with Ribaat and continues now with a focus on Arabic, Tajwīd, and Tafsīr. Karima shares that Ribaat provided a space to learn her deen in comfort, joy, and community. - [Students of a Certain Age](https://ribat.rabata.org/students-of-a-certain-age/): When I first began studying at the Ribaat Academic Institute, back before there even really was a Ribaat, I sat down and cried. Not because I was so overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to study seriously in my own home. Not because I was so spiritually moved by the Companions in the pilot class that I just couldn’t contain my tears. And not because I enjoyed the exercise of heart and mind that was the final exam. No. I cried because all the other students were in their twenties…maybe thirties…and I was the only one beginning my studies at 50 years old. - [SSC 101: Superwomen: Powers, Kryptonite, & Karamat Reflections](https://ribat.rabata.org/ssc-101-superwomen-powers-kryptonite-karamat-reflections/): At the completion of the course Superwomen: Powers, Kryptonite, and Karamat, instructor Anse Tamara requested students complete a final reflection assignment. While working as an Electrical Engineer in the Automotive Industry, she felt the strong pull to study Islam and its various fields more deeply. A couple of friends informed her about Rabata in 2020, and after her own research and exploration, she decided to attend Rabata programming and then finally registered for her first class in Fall of 2021 with the Ribaat Academic Institute. - [Ribaat Student of the Month - July ](https://ribat.rabata.org/ribaat-student-of-the-month-july/): The multi-talented, multi-faceted, life-long learner Eva Sasa seeks any opportunity for growth and development she can find. So, in the summer of 2020, when two separate friends shared information about Rabata, Eva could not help but delve deeper. She started attending the Masjid Rabata weekly Qiyam, where she fell in love with the dhikr and atmosphere.  Knowing she found her community, she soon registered for her first classes with the Ribaat Academic Institute. - [Interfaith Dialogue: Lessons for Students and Teachers](https://ribat.rabata.org/interfaith-dialogue-lessons-for-students-and-teachers/): Last week I had the opportunity to join an interfaith dialogue organized by the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies. Bringing together ten students from each faith tradition, the ICJS held a 4-day intensive course called Emerging Religious Leaders. The course allowed students who are training to be religious leaders to learn about each other’s faiths, ask questions, find similarities and differences in their belief systems, and share their experiences as people of faith in today’s world. - [Student of the Month – June](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-june-4/): When Nigora Aminova left Tajikistan in 2017, she hoped to live a life more authentically aligned with her Islamic values and faith. Whether she expected that would result in  one day teaching sisters in her home country was not clear. However, it became an inevitable opportunity after being introduced to the Ribaat Academic Institute by her dear cousin and Rabata communications expert, Umeda. In 2020, Nigora registered for her first classes, setting her on a path of joy-filled faith.  - [Student of the Month – May](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-may-3/): Noor Ahmed, homeschooling mother of four and nature lover, ventured on the path of Islamic learning with Ribaat in the Summer of 2022. With less than a year at Ribaat, Noor quickly noticed the impact of the Anisaat and classes on her life, describing it as though she was once swimming in darkness but now finally able to see. She identifies it as her “mommy fuel”, filling her up from the inside out, so she can better serve her family and her Lord. - [Teaching Digital Natives in an In-Person World](https://ribat.rabata.org/teaching-digital-natives-in-an-in-person-world/): This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the ISNA Education Conference in Chicago. It was an eye-opening experience to meet all the Islamic school leaders and teachers who attended, and to hear about the amount of work they are doing and their efforts to provide a solid education and safe spaces for Muslim youth around the United States. My contribution was a presentation about integrating technology into education. My belief is that this is not only a cool, fun, and effective way to learn, but also a necessary addition to our curricula. - [The Month of Giving](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-month-of-giving/): Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramadan˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful. (Al-Baqarah: 185) - [Student of the Month – April](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-april-3/): Justice advocate by day, Ribaat student by night. Kamilah Pickett, inspired by her faith, leverages her degrees in Public Health and Law to uplift underserved communities throughout the nation with her policy work, racial equity consulting, youth special needs advocacy, and so much more. Along with these efforts, she can also be found contributing to numerous noble endeavors around the country in the pursuit of justice, such as Believers Bail Out. In the midst of these pursuits and possibly even inspired by it, Kamilah longed for a more formal way of Islamic learning. - [Student of the Month - March](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-march-4/): Heather Mahmoud joined Rabata only two years ago, but her impact and presence can be seen in many of its spaces. Heather started classes with Ribaat in Spring of 2021 with a student-favorite, PUR 101: Training the Tongue, Purifying the Heart with Anse Marah. She credits this course as the catalyst for the best Ramadan of her life in 2021 and determined herself to pursue the Teacher Certification, insha’Allah. - [Role Model for Single Mothers: Testimony of a Single Mother](https://ribat.rabata.org/role-model-for-single-mothers-testimony-of-a-single-mother/): This article was published as part of Masjid Rabata’s Annual Maryam (as) Seminar, Might and Light: Maryam’s Single Motherhood, December 2022. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَ lets us know in the Quran, that the greatest woman ever created was Maryam عليها السلام, mother of Isa عليه السلام, and she was a single mother. She is the epitome of a role model for women of all time. What defines her as a great woman, is not that she was married and a good wife, or a good sister, which are all very important, but that she was qaanitaat (obedient to Allah), and Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَ chose her and purified her and chose her over the women of all the worlds (Al-e-Imran 42). - [Finding Solace in Maryam (as): Testimony of a Single Mother](https://ribat.rabata.org/finding-solace-in-maryam-as-testimony-of-a-single-mother/): This article was published as part of Masjid Rabata’s Annual Maryam (as) Seminar, Might and Light: Maryam’s Single Motherhood, December 2022. Maryam (as) didn’t sign up for a birthing plan. And for those of us who suddenly, or gradually, find ourselves in the role of single motherhood know the pain that comes with shattered dreams of the home we envisioned for our young ones. - [Beauty in the Struggle: Testimony of a Single Mother](https://ribat.rabata.org/beauty-in-the-struggle-testimony-of-a-single-mother/): This article was published as part of Masjid Rabata\'s Annual Maryam (as) Seminar, Might and Light: Maryam\'s Single Motherhood, December 2022. As I look back at my son\'s formative years as a single mother, I have to admit I don\'t know how I did it but it got done, wa lillahil hamd! One thing is for certain though, is that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is Most Sublime and All Aware. The hadith of the Prophet ﷺ comes to mind in which he states, - [The Essence of Purity](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-essence-of-purity/): Across centuries, cultures, and continents, the world’s major faith traditions have at least one thing in common: the use of water for purification. Purification rituals using water are seen in Islam in a number of ways, as well as in Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha’ism, and others. Purification rituals are commonly required before worship or after performing certain actions, particularly human acts such as eating, defecating, or having sexual relations. Certain body parts and bodily excretions, as well as sins, are also seen as needing purification. - [Student of the Month - February](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-february-4/): Uripah Samikun, raised in Indonesia and currently residing in Durham, NC, started Ribaat classes with the support and encouragement of her husband during the Spring 2022 semester. She registered in hopes of attaining a better understanding of Allah’s Words for herself and her teaching efforts, with the intention of pursuing a Tajwid certificate. Now, she cannot help but find her eyes glancing toward the Teacher certificate, as well. - [After the Freeze](https://ribat.rabata.org/after-the-freeze/): An icy freeze can be quite harsh. Many living things are not able to survive it. Others die a little bit, holding on to just enough life to regrow again once the freeze is over. A freeze can also be a beautiful thing to behold, at once somber and silent, foretelling a chance for a stronger, brighter future.   - [Student of the Month - January](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-january-3/): Aida Azlin is a Singaporean residing in Morocco, who runs an online global community called AA Plus for Muslim women. She attributes her most important experiences to her twelve years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 1986 to 1998, where she worked and embraced Islam. She was able to study tajweed and Arabic while there, and is now returning to traditional studies after retirement through the Ribaat Academic Institute.  - [Time to Get Caught Up!](https://ribat.rabata.org/time-to-get-caught-up/): It’s that time of term again. Registration has quieted down, questions and calls asking for information about courses have trickled to just a few here and there, and the work of scholarship is in full swing. As we in the administrative offices plan for next term, next year, and beyond, this term’s classes are ongoing in the background, and as I stroll through the virtual halls of Ribaat, I can hear the buzzing of teachers teaching, students learning, and keyboards clicking.  - [Student of the Month - November](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-november-4/): Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan is from Leeds in the north of England. This full-time writer, poet and community educator enjoys facilitating creative writing for young people and providing spaces for people to ask questions about the world and how to improve it. She has been a student with the Ribaat Academic Institute since 2018. - [Sending Salawat](https://ribat.rabata.org/sending-salawat/): Love for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a critical point of faith in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ himself says “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind,” (narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari). And Allah (swt) tells us in the Holy Quran: - [Student of the Month - October](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-october-3/): Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Rabia Nagda moved to Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 14. She serves on the Texas Committee for Nutrition and Health and is working with other volunteers to provide easy access to health and nutrition for more pediatricians in the state.  - [New Beginnings](https://ribat.rabata.org/new-beginnings/): Here we are at the start of a new season, a new academic year. The summer can be a fun and crazy season, with travel, trips, and visitors. Here at Rabata, the summer was full of beautiful gatherings and inspiring achievements. With the Ribaat Retreat, we had a gathering of beautiful souls, Ribaat students, teachers, and volunteers in one place learning, growing and worshiping together. - [Student of the Month - September](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-september-3/): Amina Wasi currently resides in Bentonville, Arkansas, and grew up in Toronto, Canada. She is in the process of pursuing her master’s degree in Information Systems Security but is taking a break as a new mom. Amina became a student with the Ribaat Academic Institute in 2020 when she began her journey with the Ribaat Tajwid Program.  - [But Why Arabic?](https://ribat.rabata.org/but-why-arabic/): “But isn’t this what is stated in the Quran?” “But isn’t this a hadith?” I hear this type of question all the time, with someone citing a verse of Quran or hadith in English Most often the translation being cited is inaccurate, incomplete, or downright incorrect. An extremely uncomfortable situation, to which I find myself needing torespond: you really need to learn Arabic. I can translate this for you, but I will never be able to give you the full understanding of the true meaning and beauty of that phase. - [Student of the Month - August](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-august-2/): Born and raised in Michigan, Amani Hamdallah eventually moved to Ohio after marriage, where she still resides. The mother of four is of Yemeni descent and has been a student with the Ribaat Academic Institute since 2019. She had been hearing of the program for a while, but it was not easy for her to join. Amani had been putting it off because she thought she could not balance her home and family life with her studies. Once she became a student, she quickly realized otherwise. - [Faith & Action](https://ribat.rabata.org/faith-action/): In the last edition of the Ribaat newsletter, I wrote about the creed of Islam, la ilahailla Allah. This is the first pillar of Islam: belief, and testifying to this belief forms the door to enter into Islam. This makes one a Muslim (one who accepts Islam), but how can we graduate to the next level of becoming a mu’min (a true believer)? How can we enrich and beautify both our inner beliefs and our outer actions? - [Student of the Month - July](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-july-4/): Heather Elsayed is currently living in Houston, Texas, and was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I turned it over and over in my mind and after thinking it through I asked to speak on a different topic. ʿAqīdah is the foundational study of creed or faith, and while I find my faith deeply rooted in my mind and heart, I didn’t think that I had a whole hour of things to say about it. My faith is summed up in the hadith of the Prophet (s) when a companion asked, “Tell me something in Islam which I will not ask anyone other than you,” and he (s) replied: - [SIR202: A Student\'s Heartfelt Intentions](https://ribat.rabata.org/sir202-a-students-heartfelt-intentions/): Dear Beloved Lord, Closer to me than my own self, and Who sees perfectly the secrets of my heart. - [AQD101: \'Islam in Victorian Britain\' a Book Review by Candace Hoffman-Hussain](https://ribat.rabata.org/aqd101-islam-in-victorian-britain-a-book-review-by-candace-hoffman-hussain/): Quiliam (born William H. Two years ago, Rukshana officially became a student herself with Ribaat. Her focus has been Quran and Tajwid classes and has found the experience to be wonderful. - [In Search of Scholarship](https://ribat.rabata.org/in-search-of-scholarship/): As we are all coming off the Ramadan high that was the peak of our spiritual year, many of us are searching for ways to hold on to the progress we made. And while we may not be able to keep up the steady level of worship we had in the blessed month, we can now turn to our studies and focus our energies there. - [Student of the Month - May](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-may-2/): Shannon Zapata went from knocking on doors as a Jehovah’s Witness to accepting Islam in 2015. A Puerto Rican single mom to a 12-year-old son, Shannon resides in Teaneck, New Jersey, and works as a school nurse for the New York City Department of Education. At the start of the pandemic, Shannon was looking for a safe online space to continue learning about her faith and began taking classes with Ribaat in 2020. She had originally heard Dr. Tamara Gray speak at a convert conference and liked her ‘real-world application of Islam’ and how down-to-earth she seemed. - [The Power of Du’a](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-power-of-dua/): I was plagued with worry about ending up alone in this life. Subhanallah, every time I think of this du’a now it gives me a little giggle. After a few years of consistently, diligently making this du’a all through Ramadans, taraweeh prayers, fasting du’a and night prayers, the world changed in a way no one could have expected. It started with chat rooms and email, then messenger, Skype, and Facebook, followed soon after by Whatsapp, Instagram, and Twitter. For a decade or more now, I have found myself virtually surrounded with people near and far, and I am never left alone for a moment. This has its upside and downsides, but to me it is on a very large scale the answer to a very fervent du’a. I have not been alone for a moment for years on end! - [Student of the Month - April](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-april-2/): Aqsa Akram was born and raised in New Jersey, where she still resides in a multi-generational home with her parents, brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece. Today, we are nearly at the midpoint of Sha’ban, and have just over two weeks to prepare for Ramadan. This is the month in which the Quran was revealed, the month in which there is a night that is “better than a thousand nights”, and a month in which the Prophet (s) tells us that fasting its days and spending its nights in worship can wash away our sins. - [Student of the Month - March](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-march-3/): Javon Graham is a new convert to Islam, converting in July 2021. The phrase gave me pause, and I felt a deep sense of appreciation and connection that spans centuries. - [Student of the Month - February](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-february-3/): Ida Nitter grew up in a town on the western coast of Norway but has spent most of her adult life in the United States. Three weeks ago the world lost one of its lights. He passed away, as life by nature sweeps us all down this same road, but in his case, he left much behind to benefit the world and make it a brighter place. - [SIR 101 A Man With Wings; Jafar bin Abi Talib ra by Amal Al-Sibai](https://ribat.rabata.org/a-man-with-wings-jafar-bin-abi-talib-ra-by-amal-al-sibai/): As Muslims, we love anyone whom Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved. The putting together of the puzzle pieces expresses the importance of community and being open to work together despite our differences, just like the Muhajireen and Ansar balanced each other out. The dots vet colors to represent all the different degrees of faith in Muslims and non-Muslims.  Notice some dots are fully in the rays of light, some fully in the dark and some a little in both. - [Imposters, All](https://ribat.rabata.org/imposters-all/): Of course, we should attribute our success to the grace of Allah (swt), and know that all that is good within ourselves comes from Him. But this becomes a problem when we decide to sit back and hand the reins to others when it is time to take action. - [SIR 202 Lessons Learned by Heather Alsayed](https://ribat.rabata.org/sir-202-lessons-learned-by-heather-alsayed/): Oh Allah, I want for my Sisters  What I want for myself  May Quran be always in my hand  Not collecting dust on the shelf.  - [AQD101 Joy Jots: Book Review by Anonymous](https://ribat.rabata.org/aqd101-joy-jots-book-review-by-anonymous/): With weekly lessons that help strengthen the heart and rediscover the joy of life, Joy Jots: Exercises for a Happy Heart by Tamara Gray is a wonderful guide to keeping on the path of Islam and establishing a closer relationship to Allah swt. She describes herself as deeply blessed—married to a supportive husband and mother to four remarkable children, with her eldest son married and faithfully visiting each weekend. - [Student of the Month – February](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-february-7/): Sarwat Khan was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, where opportunities to formally study the Quran were limited. Growing up in the American South, she carried a quiet but persistent dream: to one day read and study the Book of Allah with fluency and confidence. Today, Sarwat lives in Dallas, Texas, where she is a devoted stay-at-home mother to six children. Alongside nurturing her family, she also works as a writing coach, helping others refine and elevate their written voice. - [Iʿtikaf: Spiritual Seclusion with the Divine](https://ribat.rabata.org/itikaf-spiritual-seclusion-with-the-divine/): My first experience with iʿtikaf was very different from most people. My grandmother, may Allah have mercy on her, would go into iʿtikaf every year in the last ten nights of Ramadan. She would spend the first part of Ramadan sewing a cloth tent out of a beautiful, simple, delicate, breathable material. Inside, she would put a soft prayer carpet, her masbaha or dhikr beads, and mushaf (Quran). When the last ten nights of Ramadan would arrive, she would enclose herself in the tent, and we wouldn’t see her or hear from her until the day of Eid al-Fitr. When the night of Eid was announced, she would emerge from the tent more beautiful and fragrant than I had ever seen her before, and we would adorn her with necklaces of roses that we had made and give her special sweets, all the while congratulating her. Although I didn’t know what it meant at the time, I knew it was something very special, and something to be celebrated. - [A Tribute in Memory of Anse Saida Abbed-Ahmed](https://ribat.rabata.org/a-tribute-in-memory-of-anse-saida-abbed-ahmed/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Student of the Month–December](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-december-5/): We are excited to introduce December’s Student of the Month. Originally from Sudan, she immigrated to the United States in 2010 to pursue her dream of working with children. After graduating from medical school, she completed seven years of training in pediatrics and emergency pediatric medicine, living in five different states along the way. Today, she and her family have finally settled in New Jersey, where she balances life as a pediatric emergency doctor, wife, and homeschooling mother of four children, aged seven to thirteen. - [Ribaat University: In Pursuit of Knowledge](https://ribat.rabata.org/ribaat-university-in-pursuit-of-knowledge/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [The Light of the Prophet ﷺ through Love Languages](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-light-of-the-prophet-through-love-languages/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Grounds for Growth](https://ribat.rabata.org/grounds-for-growth/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Harvesting Knowledge](https://ribat.rabata.org/harvesting-knowledge/): Our lives are like fields. We sow seeds through our actions, words, and intentions, and what we plant determines the harvest we leave behind. What will my legacy be? The Prophet ﷺ taught us that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end—except for three: sadaqa jariya (continuous charity), knowledge that is beneficial, and the prayers of a virtuous descendant. In a world where so much fades, possessions break, money is spent, and accomplishments are forgotten, these three legacies endure, continuing to send blessings to the believer even after they have returned to Allah. If you are able to produce knowledge and share this knowledge, please do so. If you can publish a book, then do it, but if not, teach something. Create a video. This will stay for you as long as people are benefitting from it. You will continue reaping the benefit from this harvest.   - [Student of the Month – October](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-october-6/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Time Management Techniques](https://ribat.rabata.org/time-management-techniques/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Why Is It Important to Learn Arabic? A New Answer to an Old Question ](https://ribat.rabata.org/why-is-it-important-to-learn-arabic-a-new-answer-to-an-old-question/): Over the past two decades, I have inhabited many roles in relation to Arabic—learner, teacher, researcher, and curriculum developer. The question “Why is it important to study Arabic?” has been a recurrent one during my journey. The simple response is that the answer depends on the questioner. For some, the value lies in religious goals; for others, it lies in heritage, academic ambitions, or even politicized motivations. In reality, there is an answer—and an Arabic—for everyone. - [Student of the Month – September](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-september-5/): Born in Bangladesh and now a longtime resident of Florida, Panjeton Noor has built a life centered on learning, teaching, and family. She completed her bachelor’s in psychology from UCF, graduating summa cum laude, and went on to earn her master’s in education from USF. During her graduate studies, she worked for four years at the Department of Children and Families, and after graduating, she taught at Universal Academy of Florida until her retirement. - [Under the White Tent: A Spiritual Retreat to Remember](https://ribat.rabata.org/under-the-white-tent-a-spiritual-retreat-to-remember/): In the heart of the lush English countryside, where rolling green hills stretch under skies that often kissed the earth with mist and sunshine in equal measure, a gathering of over one hundred Muslim women from across Europe—mostly from the United Kingdom—came together for something rare and extraordinary: a spiritual retreat grounded in tradition, knowledge, and sisterhood. - [Student of the Month—August](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-august-6/): Born in Iraq and raised in the United States, Intidar Aljabery has lived nearly three decades in her adopted homeland. Her journey brought her from Detroit, Michigan, where she first learned American Sign Language (ASL) in elementary school, to her current home in Minnesota. Deaf since childhood, ASL has been her primary language and a key to her flourishing life of service and learning. - [Where Faiths Meet: Connection, Compassion, and Shared Humanity](https://ribat.rabata.org/where-faiths-meet-connection-compassion-and-shared-humanity/): Alhamdulilah, I had the privilege of attending an interfaith intensive through Ribaat this summer—an experience that was both humbling and transformative. The retreat brought together three different cohorts, representing all the Abrahamic faiths, for four days of learning, teaching, and genuine connection. We navigated challenging topics, but we also found joy in the small, everyday details of our lives, discovering common ground in unexpected places. - [Pilgrims Fi Sabilillah: From Mecca to Minnesota](https://ribat.rabata.org/pilgrims-fi-sabilillah-from-minnesota-to-mecca/): I attended Rabata’s retreat for the first time, and I returned home transformed into a different version of myself. The experience reminded me profoundly of my journey to Hajj, both in its challenges and its revelations. Like Hajj, this retreat demanded sacrifice. Being away from my young children for five days, forgoing the comfort of familiar sleep and the solace of home, every aspect of my routine was tested. Yet in this testing, I found something sacred. - [Timeless Traits of Muslim Scholars: Lessons for Today](https://ribat.rabata.org/timeless-traits-of-muslim-scholars-lessons-for-today/): From the dawn of Islam until today, there have been magnanimous men who shaped Islamic history. These scholars lived and passed, but their legacy lives on. This essay will examine some of the common traits of the great Muslim scholars in the Islamic tradition. - [A Letter to Imam al-Tirmidhi](https://ribat.rabata.org/a-letter-to-imam-al-tirmidhi/): Dear Imam Muhammad ibn Sawrah ibn Musa ibn al-Dhahhak al-Tirmidhi It is my great pleasure to address you in a letter. May Allah ﷻ elevate your rank in the hereafter.  I am currently taking a course on traditional Muslim scholars through the Ribaat Academic Institute. We have learned about so many amazing scholars, but your name and your story stayed in my mind.  This is mostly because we share the same last name.  It is said that one of your descendants left Tirmidh to give dawah in India. In South Asia, the dha (ذ) sound became transformed to za (ز), hence the last name Tirmizi among those who came after him. - [A Reflection on Blessings](https://ribat.rabata.org/a-reflection-on-blessings/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [In Their Company, I Found My Way: A Letter to Imam Ash-Shafi\'i](https://ribat.rabata.org/in-their-company-i-found-my-way-a-letter-to-imam-ash-shafii/): \"When I first read about how you developed usul al-fiqh—laying the foundation of legal principles that helped organize Islamic jurisprudence—I realized that scholarship isn’t about winning arguments; it’s about guiding people closer to Allah through clarity, justice, and compassion. You didn’t aim to simply refute or correct; you sought to understand, to elevate, and to unite.\" - [In Their Company, I Found My Way: A Letter to Imam al-Bukhari](https://ribat.rabata.org/in-their-company-i-found-my-way-a-letter-to-imam-al-bukhari/): From the travels you did to acquire knowledge to the thought you put in to recording it in your books, you dedicated your life for the sake of Allah and left us treasures! This day and age, most of us have so much knowledge, and it is at our fingertips, but we do not know what to do with it. Some do not know how to learn, it seems, and some are just occupied in worldly things so much so that it scares me for them. - [Student of the Month – July](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-july-6/): Our Ribaat Student of the Month for July 2025 is Kaha Osman. She is a Somali Canadian currently based in Ottawa, Canada. Aisha Morgan had long known that there is no one who stands between her heart and God, but at this moment, she finally felt an overwhelming sense of closeness. “It was like God told me: It\'s your turn.”  Aisha, who has won all our hearts with her achievements in Quran studies, is a graceful, gentle, and energetic lifelong learner and teacher. In her mid-seventies, she is a proud grandma, traveler of the world, and a dear friend to many. She happily shared her Quran journey with me today. - [Consistent Purification](https://ribat.rabata.org/consistent-purification/): The process of purification is like planting a tree which requires attention and tendering. I connect with the relevance of how tazkiyah or purification is—which involves growth. In order for my tree to grow, I need to pay close attention to tending to it, making sure it’s getting the right nutrients, and also the process of weeding, i.e. cleaning the heart from anything that would taint it. - [For Allah\'s Sake](https://ribat.rabata.org/for-allahs-sake/): Firstly, I would like to express my deep appreciation of Anse Farhana and the TAs/admins. I really appreciate the genuine and encouraging feedback on our assignments. I enrolled in this course because I wanted to develop a connection to the Quran. I know Anse said that at the beginning of every ayat to put our own name there, so that it is personal. - [To Our Dear Rabateers: The Hidden Hands Behind Ramadan Miracles](https://ribat.rabata.org/to-our-dear-rabateers-the-hidden-hands-behind-ramadan-miracles/): Dearest Rabateer, As we enter into this blessed month of Ramadan, a time of miracles, mercy, and renewal, we pause to reflect on the mighty force behind so much of what makes this month special at Rabata: you. - [Fasting with Faith and Purpose](https://ribat.rabata.org/fasting-with-faith-and-purpose/): The Muslim Ummah is in the midst of observing the second Ramadan to come since the genocide took place in Gaza. While many of us are looking forward to the rituals associated with the month of fasting, the reality is that millions of our brothers and sisters around the world will not be able to observe a normal Ramadan. - [Student of the Month - March](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-march-6/): Nour Cauveren is the author of Sunday Serenity, a weekly newsletter that helps fellow Muslims bridge the gap between knowledge and action—making the lessons from Islam practical for everyday life. Before becoming a writer, she was a certified life coach who worked with hundreds of women. However, she made the difficult decision to step away from coaching to focus on writing full-time, especially after the idea for her book, Becoming a Tranquil Soul: 5 Habits to Focus a Distracted Heart, emerged in Ramadan 1444 AH (2023). Though the transition was daunting, writing has brought her deep fulfillment. She finds immense joy when readers connect with Sunday Serenity and share how her words have impacted them. - [Rising Together: The Evolution and Future of Rabata](https://ribat.rabata.org/rising-together-the-evolution-and-future-of-rabata/): In 2014, when my halaqa teacher recommended that I take a Ribaat class—I had no idea how profoundly it would shape my learning journey. Online learning was unfamiliar to me, and at first, it felt strange. I had always preferred in-person classes, where engagement felt more natural. But despite my initial hesitation, I stayed the course, and that decision changed my life in ways I never imagined. - [Sha’ban: The Forgotten Month](https://ribat.rabata.org/shaban-the-forgotten-month/): There is a beautiful month—the eighth month of the Islamic calendar, lovingly placed between a Sacred Month, Rajab, and Ramadan—that is forgotten.  Sha’ban is this beautiful month, and translated from Arabic, it means the month of separation. Excitement for Ramadan rises, and hurried preparations swallow our time during this month. Amid our mass shopping and planning, the importance, blessings, and rewards of Sha’ban slip away from us. This neglected month is one in which we need to wake up and give it its importance, remembering it as true spiritual preparation for Ramadan. Not only is it preparation for what is to come, but Sha’ban holds its own significance. It is a month that consists of historic events, blessings of a powerful night of forgiveness second to Laylat-ul-Qadr, an invitation to purify our hearts with salawat on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and a call to increase in fasting and Quran recitation. - [Student of the Month - February](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-february-6/): From Indonesia to the Pacific Northwest, Ratu Vanda Wardini’s journey has been one of devotion—to her family, community, and faith. Residing in Portland, Oregon, she is a dedicated wife and mother of four boys, having homeschooled them before they transitioned to high school. While her family life keeps her engaged, Vanda’s commitment extends beyond her home.  - [Loving Learning: Reflecting on a Lifetime Journey](https://ribat.rabata.org/loving-learning-reflecting-on-a-lifetime-journey/): I have always been passionate about education and my journey over the years has informed my role as Education Director at Rabata. The first day of school always had me lying awake the night before, unable to sleep from excitement—the anticipation of meeting a new teacher, starting a new grade, reading more books, and learning new things. As a child, my mother would lovingly refer to me as Dr. Eamaan, as I longed to one day fill that title, hoping to reach the pinnacle of knowledge. I would seek out learning in all possible ways, even jealous when my older brothers were assigned homework and I was not. Soon enough, my day came, and I remember eagerly rushing to my desk to complete my much-awaited homework. - [Student of the Month - January](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-january-5/): Meet Ariel Schmid, our Ribaat Student of the Month who is on a journey to deepen her connection to Islam. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, to American and German parents, Ariel now resides in her hometown with her Palestinian husband and enjoys spending time with his extended family of siblings, cousins, and young ones. Ariel works as a strategy analyst at VITAS Healthcare, a leading national hospice provider, but her life is as much about nurturing faith and knowledge as it is about her professional endeavors. - [When Life Gives You Lemons, Take It: The Art of Submission](https://ribat.rabata.org/when-life-gives-you-lemons-take-it-the-art-of-submission/): At the beginning of every year, Anse Tamara asks us to try and identify our personal word of the year, specifying a focus area for the year ahead of us. I love this activity, as it really helps shape my goals and aspirations. For two years in a row, I chose the same word: taslim—complete surrender. - [Student of the Month – December](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-december-4/): The story of Ribaat women echoes in the journey of our December Student of the Month, Meherun Khanom-Noor. British-Bangladeshi, Meherun’s journey with studying Islam has transformed over the years, especially as she navigated new life changes, from university studies to, now, stay-at-home mother to three. In the midst of it all, she has always been a dedicated student of knowledge, whether it be in university classes, personal learning with podcasts and reading, or now with Ribaat. - [She Sat by Me](https://ribat.rabata.org/she-sat-by-me/): She sat by me Little did we know that her mother threw up that morning… She praised her Lord unfailingly - [Leaving a Legacy Through a Legion of Writers](https://ribat.rabata.org/leaving-a-legacy-through-a-legion-of-writers/): When the weather turns chilly and the coffees turn pumpkiny, most people dream of sweaters and firesides and turkey. Born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Irene has lived a truly international life, with experiences spanning Japan, Qatar, and her current home in St. Paul, Minnesota. The word \"Rabi\'\" in arabic means Spring; the season in which flowers bloom, the season of growth and renewal. As we move forward now, we ask ourselves: Have the recent Rabi\' impacted me in any way? Did I see any growth in my love for Rasulullah sallAllahu \'alaihi wasallam? The Salawat I did, the Seerah I read, the gatherings I attended in remembrance of his birth.. Have my heart felt the change? Is this love mirroring in my actions now? Am I a better follower of Rasulullah sallAllahu \'alaihi wasallam today..? - [Student of the Month - October](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-october-5/): Meet our Ribaat student, a California native who found her way to Islam and now calls Europe home. Every year, it brings together women from diverse backgrounds, ages, cultures, and countries to engage in a shared journey of learning, spiritual growth, worship, and sisterhood. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of community, knowledge, and spiritual renewal, all of which are central to Ribaat’s mission. The retreat creates a space where women can build lifelong friendships and support networks, and many attendees leave with spiritual rejuvenation, and a renewed sense of sisterhood and community. - [The Beating Heart of Rabata: The Impact of Our Volunteers](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-beating-heart-of-rabata-the-impact-of-our-volunteers/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [The Power of Positivity](https://ribat.rabata.org/the-power-of-positivity/): Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet ﷺ said: Allah Almighty ﷻ says: I am as My servant expects of Me and I am with him as he remembers Me. Faced with different challenges throughout her life, she was walking home from work, hiding all the disappointments her tired face was showing in the darkness of the Sarajevo night. “I felt as if all my hopes lost hope and disappeared,” she shared, smiling. Surrendering slowly to the gloominess of her heart, she looked at the lights of a billboard in front of her and saw these words:  - [Student of the Month - July](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-july-5/): Liset Rodriguez ia proud Mexican American, originally from the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, currently residing in Minnesota, conveniently close to Rabata! This year, the dialogue included students from 12 Muslim, Christian, and Jewish seminaries and universities, all working towards becoming scholars and leaders, and took place at the Pearlstone Retreat Center in Maryland. It was a varied collection of individuals ranging in age from the late teens to the late 50s, some who are already leaders in their spaces and others who are just starting out on a path of knowledge. - [Student of the Month – June](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-june-5/): Lisa Nyabinghi, Ribaat Academic Institute’s June Student of the Month, embodies her gratitude to Allah ﷻ in all arenas of life. As she faced the reality of a life-altering health diagnosis with a dim prognosis, Lisa soon developed a deep consciousness of the control of her Lord, regardless of the claims of doctors. It was the month when the Quran was first brought down to the heavens of this world and during this month, the Angel Jibreel (‘alayhi-s-salaam) would complete a yearly review of the Quran with the Prophet ﷺ. So it is of the sunnah to increase our Quran reading during this Holy month. - [Fruits of Faith: Endless Blessings of Good Deeds](https://ribat.rabata.org/fruits-of-faith-endless-blessings-of-good-deeds/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Student of the Month – February](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-february-5/): In the heart of Utah, where the majestic mountains reach toward the sky, resides Aisha Hassan, our February student of the month! Allah ta’ala works in mysterious ways and while Dr. Samreen knew nothing of Minnesota, Allah set her on a path. Seven years ago, work brought Dr. Samreen to the Minnesota area and soon after, she heard about Rabata. She longed to visit, but the location felt unfamiliar and daunting. However, after the RCC opened its Arden Hills location, she knew it was time. - [Beautiful Endings and Fresh Beginnings](https://ribat.rabata.org/beautiful-endings-and-fresh-beginnings/): As an educator, this time of the year is always bittersweet for me. While the semester draws to a close with exams, class parties, and grades, I also feel a sense of sadness for the ending of another calendar year. This season always marks for me the end of one part of my journey in this life, and the inception of the next. For me, it invites reflection, closure, and anticipation. As the calendar draws to a close, it prompts me to look back upon the experiences, challenges, and growth that have shaped me over the preceding months. It also inspires me to cast my gaze forward, brimming with aspirations, resolutions, and the promise of fresh beginnings. - [Write with Allah as your Audience](https://ribat.rabata.org/write-with-allah-as-your-audience/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [What is in a year?](https://ribat.rabata.org/what-is-in-a-year/): Associate Islamic Studies and Liberal Arts Teaching Arabic Teaching Islam Bachelor Islamic Teachings and Traditions Applied Pedagogy and Innovative Learning Applied Psychology Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics Business, Organizational Leadership, and Development History and Futures Studies Literature, Writing, and Publishing Graduate Master of Theological Studies Doctor of Theology Graduate Certificate in Islamic Belief and Practice Lifelong Learning Islam Arabic Quran Certificates Teaching Islam Arabic Language and Cultural Fluency Sanad Center About Quran Courses Quran Certifications Hadith Certifications Riverstead: Islam Ribāṭ Riverstead: Islam offers an open pathway into the essentials of Islamic knowledge, without attachment to a degree or certificate.Through this program, […] - [Student of the Month - November](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-november-5/): In the throes of world-wide isolation, Dr. Aaisha Vawda felt this separation more poignantly as she migrated across the Atlantic, from South Africa to Canada. The loss of family, friends, and familiarity left the introverted Aaisha in search of something more, but still hesitant to venture out into her new community. After a few months, her mother, recognizing her loneliness, shared the Rabata instagram page with Aaisha, encouraging her to explore the organization. Dr. Aaisha obliged and soon found her spiritual and emotional lifeline, a family away from family, a much needed space. - [Back to Writing](https://ribat.rabata.org/back-to-writing/): To my dismay, I didn’t have another ready-made story idea burning a hole in my pocket. And when I thought of a few (really good ones, actually), a malicious voice always overrode my enthusiasm: This idea requires too much research… That one has a good premise but where would it go from there? And worst of all, You did it once, but you know you can’t do it again. The voice paralyzed me for years.  Then I remembered my red spiral notebook. - [Importance of Etiquette when Seeking Knowledge](https://ribat.rabata.org/importance-of-etiquette-when-seeking-knowledge/): Covid-19 did not do us many favors but one of the best things to come out of that trying time was the proliferation of online methods of study.  At Ribaat, we have been at the forefront of digital knowledge spaces even before that time and we find our numbers of students accessing our classes increasing every year.  This is indeed a sign of more and more women seeking out knowledge and finding that online spaces to learn can be just as effective.  As a teacher at Ribaat, teaching women on this online platform brings me joy.  As Anse Najiyya pointed out last month, our students are of all ages, life stages and levels of knowledge.   - [Student of the Month – October](https://ribat.rabata.org/student-of-the-month-october-4/): With great joy and much confidence, the Ribaat Academic Institute announces the 2023 recipient of the Andrea Scholarship: Kori Majeed. Mrs. Majeed, self-proclaimed serial learner, considers education as a necessary tool in propelling all her ideas forward. She lives a life of beautiful intentionality and purpose, and as a result, she exudes faith in action.
